Billy Murray: The Rogue Photographer Redefining Badass Portraiture in Los Angeles

In a city brimming with creative talent, Billy Murray is carving a niche as one of Los Angeles’ most exciting up-and-coming photographers. Known for his dark, moody aesthetic and unique ability to turn his subjects into unrecognizable, cinematic villains, Murray’s work is in high demand among those seeking bold, unforgettable portraits. But his rise to prominence wasn’t conventional—it’s a story fueled by grit, passion, and an unrelenting creative vision.

From Fighter to Photographer

Billy Murray’s creative journey began in the world of combat sports. As the founder of Hosstyle Talent, a web company that connected fighters with sponsorships and entertainment opportunities, Murray often traveled to gyms armed with nothing more than a Samsung Android phone, a single light, and a black backdrop. This minimalist setup allowed him to create striking promo clips, igniting his love for visual storytelling.

“I really started loving the dark and moody concept,” he recalls. “I kept getting more creative with the process, learning little tricks, and honing my future style. I added one piece of photography equipment at a time, and by 2022, I finally purchased my first camera.”

What began as makeshift shoots in his apartment studio has since evolved into a fully-fledged creative powerhouse. Inspired by the gritty, raw energy of 70s, 80s, and 90s films, Murray’s work captures the essence of his subjects while pushing them outside their comfort zones.

A Signature Style That Stands Alone

Murray’s distinct artistic vision hasn’t gone unnoticed. One of his defining moments came when a famous Hollywood actor’s wife remarked, “If you were to put up 100 different badass photos, I would be able to spot your work instantly. It stands alone!”

For Murray, the secret lies in the process. “Everyone has a dark side or an alter ego,” he says. “The goal is to pull that out and create a photo that keeps telling a story long after it’s been taken. Like a movie poster, the right pose, lighting, and wardrobe can portray an entire narrative in a single frame.”

Through his unique approach, Murray transforms his clients into larger-than-life characters—villains in their own cinematic stories. Whether it’s an intense stare, dramatic lighting, or an unexpected wardrobe choice, his work exudes an energy that’s both powerful and unforgettable.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

Murray’s aspirations for his brand, Hosstyle Photography, are as ambitious as his creative pursuits. Currently based in Toronto but with eyes set on Los Angeles and New York, he envisions his studios becoming the go-to hubs for bold, badass portraiture.

“In 5 to 10 years, I want to be the most in-demand photographer for badass portraits,” he shares. “But beyond that, I want to evolve—as a father, as a photographer, and as a human being. Without personal growth, none of these successes would mean anything.”

The Man Behind the Lens

Billy Murray’s path to photography is as unconventional as his work. A former competitive boxer and actor—his claim to fame being the star of a Megadeth music video— "Whose Life [Is It Anyways?]" Murray approaches his craft with the same discipline and intensity that once defined his time in the ring.

His lack of formal training hasn’t hindered his progress; instead, it’s fueled a raw, unfiltered creative energy. “I have no background in photography, no formal training, or previous knowledge in this field,” he says. “But what drives me is my creative eye and vision.”

When he’s not behind the camera, you’ll find Murray living an active lifestyle, hitting the gym, or enjoying coffee. His commitment to health and balance keeps his creative demons at bay, allowing him to channel his energy into his art.

Why Billy Murray Is the Photographer to Watch

Billy Murray is more than just a photographer—he’s a storyteller, a visionary, and a creative force who dares to reimagine portraiture. His ability to transform his subjects and capture their essence in ways they never thought possible sets him apart in a crowded industry.

For those looking to uncover their inner badass or create an immortal masterpiece, Billy Murray is the name to know. With a growing reputation and an unstoppable drive, he’s poised to become one of the most sought-after photographers in Los Angeles and beyond.
